King George VI

King George IV, 1943

On February 6, in 1952, Britain’s King George VI died and his eldest daughter Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II. Both were photographed by Karsh in 1943, when Elizabeth was just 18, and Her Royal Highness would go on to sit for Mr. Karsh on four more occasions over the next 44 years: 1951, 1966, 1984, and 1987.
