Car Nation Canada: An Illustrated History

Ford of Canada, 1951

“Car Nation Canada: An Illustrated History, reviews the cultural and economic changes that have shaped Canada’s love of – and dependence on – the car, the primary mode of transportation for four out of every five Canadians.”

Karsh spent two weeks at Ford Canada’s plants in Windsor in 1951 and of this environmental portrait, which is included in the book, he said, “The garb of the spray painters and their intense momentary involvement with each other reminded me of two surgeons consulting each other in the operating room.”

Car Nation Canada: An Illustrated History by Dimitry Anastakis is available from Lorimer Publishing.
