Dr. Gerhard Herzberg

Dr. Gerhard Herzberg, 1972

Gerhard Herzberg was a German-Canadian pioneering physicist and physical chemist, who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1971, “for his contributions to the knowledge of electronic structure and geometry of molecules, particularly free radicals”.

Herzberg fled Germany in 1935 and was able to find work in the physics department at the University of Saskatchewan, where he would remain for ten years. Earlier this month, the University’s physics theatre was officially dedicated to Herzberg. This Karsh portrait of the great pioneer has been used for a plaque which was unveiled in an official ceremony earlier this month.
