On June 3, 1937, former King Edward VIII married Wallis Simpson. Having reigned for less than a year, Edward became the first English monarch to voluntarily abdicate the throne when he stepped down in December 1936 to marry Simpson, an American divorcée. His brother succeeded him as King George VI and later granted Edward the title of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Windsor.
