
Jawaharlal Nehru was an Indian independence activist and, subsequently, the first Prime Minister of India, as well as a central figure in Indian politics both before and after independence. He served as the country’s first prime minister for 16 years until his death in 1964. He was photographed by Karsh twice during his prime ministership, in 1949 and 1956. Nehru died on this day, May 27, in 1964 (b. 1889).
