Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007) was a Soviet and Russian cellist and conductor. Karsh’s records read “Photographed in La Camargue, France, in the home of Henri Fabre.” Rostropovich was awarded the 1974 Award of the International League of Human Rights, the same year that he was photographed by Karsh.
(Fabre appears to be a French aviator and the inventor of the first successful seaplane, but he was not photographed by Karsh.)
Rostropovich was photographed on this day, October 1, in 1974 and his portrait has been newly added to the website.
