Norman Jewison was a Canadian film and television director and producer. He directed numerous feature films and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director three times in three separate decades for In the Heat of the Night (1967), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), and Moonstruck (1987).

Jewison was photographed by Karsh in 1973 for Karsh’s book Canadians, in which he wrote “There is a delightful boyishness about him, an openness to other people, an interest in everything… He is also a superb listener, always alert for words and ideas that will help to inspire one more dazzling cinematic experience.”
