Pierre Soulages

Pierre Soulages, 1965

In April, 1965, Karsh took a trip to France. His sitters there included artists such as Man Ray, Joan Miro, Jean Paul Riopelle, and Pierre Soulages. Soulages (1919-2022) was a French painter, printmaker, and sculptor. He is known as “the painter of black”, owing to his interest in it “both as a colour and a non-colour. When light is reflected on black, it transforms and transmutes it. It opens a mental field all its own.”

Soulages was photographed on this day, April 12.
