Portia White was a Canadian contralto, known for becoming the first Black Canadian concert singer to achieve international fame. She was photographed by Karsh in 1946, the same year that she undertook a three-month tour of Central and South America and the Caribbean, having made her national debut as a singer in Toronto in 1941. Portia White was born on this day, June 24, in 1911 (d. 1968).
