Thomas J. Watson

Thomas Watson, 1948

Thomas J. Watson Esq., is pictured here in 1948 and was recorded by Karsh’s studio as “President, International Business Machines Corp.” He was photographed again the following year along with “members of his family” and again solo in 1954 and ’55.

According to Wikipedia, “The “THINK” slogan was first used by Thomas J. Watson in December 1911, while managing the sales and advertising departments at the National Cash Register Company. At an uninspiring sales meeting, Watson interrupted, saying “The trouble with every one of us is that we don’t think enough. We don’t get paid for working with our feet – we get paid for working with our heads”. Watson then wrote THINK on the easel.” Watson died on this day, June 19, in 1956 (b. 1874).
