Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill, 1941

We say goodbye to 2020, and celebrate the 79th anniversary of the making of this portrait. On December 30, 1941, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill gave a speech to the Canadian Parliament. Unbeknownst to Mr. Churchill, Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King arranged for Karsh to take Churchill’s portrait immediately after the speech. For Mr. Karsh, the rest is history. Read more about the making of this photograph, and watch a video of Karsh and Morley Safer recreating it for CBS’ 60 Minutes. Also take a look at the frame that followed
