Born on this day, April 29, 1936, Zubin Mehta is one of the most celebrated conductors of his generation. He holds the title of music director emeritus of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor emeritus of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Among other roles Mehta served as music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra from 1961 to 1967. In 1978, he became music director and principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic, a position he held until 1991. He was still conducting as of 2022.
