King George VI

King George VI, 1943

On February 6, 1952, Britain’s King George VI died, and his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, ascended the throne as Queen Elizabeth II. Both had been photographed by Yousuf Karsh in 1943, when Elizabeth was just 18. She would sit for Karsh on four additional occasions over the next 44 years – in 1951, 1966, 1984, and 1987.
