The English author H. G. Wells wrote more than forty novels and dozens of short stories. He foresaw the advent of aircraft, tanks, space travel, nuclear weapons, satellite television and something resembling the World Wide Web.

Wells was photographed on Karsh’s trip to England in 1943. Others who were photographed include authors George Bernard Shaw and Noël Coward.

H. G. Wells died on this day, August 13, in 1946 (b. 1866).
